FCC votes in favor for rules that reduce 'digital discrimination' for communities with poor internet access - Lemmy.World

While I heard about this coming to a vote a few days ago, the FCC has voted in favor for the rules today.

This is huge. The digital divide is still very real. We forgot about it because richer areas got gigabit, and brought the average up, but poor areas haven’t improved much since dial up.

This is the best thing to happen to for internet, since the fediverse. or since hd video was made available for free streaming uncapped particularly by YouTube

and now more people can experience this. I consider this a win for all. Internet prices will go down. Did we lose anything from this proposal? I don’t think so. but time will tell as of course the rules had only just now passed.

The only loss is they should have clawed back the money the ISPs stole in the 00’s, but I’m still happy with this outcome.
very true, i’m supportive of areas getting internet service myself.
Cue predictable whining from telcos who no longer have a patsy installed in the FCC. Have a heaping helping of "obey the regulations," followed by a hot steaming cup of my piss.
