How are gamer Linux distros going with regards to "retro" PC gaming? I mean, games from the 2000-2010 era, not as much older stuff. What would happen if I wanted, for instance, to play Dawn of War 1 on Linux? I don't think these games are getting as much support as other more modern games, are they?

@Varyag This is a good question. I wonder how reliable WINE is.

@Varyag ...my attempt at playing Anachronox a while back was halted by issues you'd also have on Windows (that weren't technically insurmountable but really annoying instead)? Not sure how that counts. :p

Same happened with a bunch of Touhou shmups I had to break out dgVoodoo2 (a wrapper for old graphics APIs to DirectX 11) to fix issues you have on Windows as well with game resolution and then fan vsync patches on top of that also needed on modern Windows.

@gourd Well, the fact that solutions exist is pretty good too. I know it's expecting to much to encounter 100% compatibility, but if I can at least try most of them, makes me more secure in maintaining a Linux retrogaming box.

@Varyag My summary is basically "unfortunately, it seems to be roughly as reliable as Windows at running old Windows games".

(Also had to get up to some Shenanigans with a Windows VM and a tool to fake old Windows locales with the patches on some of those Touhou games, but that's just pre-Unicode Japanese character handling being completely broken on modern Windows and never worked on WINE.  )
