if you're a metatools/KPT lover as much as i was, and you're into software UI/UX design... matthias müller-prove's 1999 visual history of kai krause's software is 👌

The Interface of Kai Krause's Software @mprove

@vga256 Bryce 3D was one of the most frustrating UIs I've ever dealt with. The primary control area looked like someone had dumped out a sack of potatoes. It was immediately clear that this program was developed for someone who wasn't me. That's fine; it's just that most of the baffling opaque UIs I had encountered up until that point were character-based and provided no hint on how to exit them. I wasn't expecting it on a Mac.
@arclight @vga256
and Bryce was so glacier slow ... actually glaciers are WAY, WAY faster
@vga256 oh yeah. I remember this. We had it installed on a couple Mac Pro in Media
@LoganHighlen perfect machines for the job! after Bryce 4, it could parallel render over a network.
@vga256 Imagine how awesome that UI could be nowadays with our high res retina displays. But no, all we get now is colorless thin lines with no texture.
@MetalSnake @vga256 I agree, though it's certainly divided opinions on here! I spent many a happy hour with Bryce 3D.
@vga256 @bigzaphod oh my!! I spent hour upon hour creating amazing landscapes in Bryce. I wish it was still around.
Bryce 3D

@BonehouseWasps @vga256 @bigzaphod Thx!! Though it seems the software is no longer available :(
@simonharper @vga256 @bigzaphod Ah - that's a shame. It seems to be blocked by my ISP. 😬
@BonehouseWasps @vga256 @bigzaphod Yeah, oh well. I still have good memories of it to keep me company :)

@simonharper it still is :)

not bad for $20!

Daz 3D
@vga256 hmm. Only 32bit. Probs very slow on a modern Mac with M series ARM processors.
@simonharper won't run at all on anything > 10.6
@vga256 I loved Bryce. Compared to what I'd experienced before with ui driven but slow 3D Construction Kit and the script driven Persistance of Vision on the Atari ST it was amazing.
@Baggypants me too. the people complaining about bryce seem to be forgetting how vile the UI's of competing 3d modelers were at the time :)
@vga256 Never quite got Kai's approach to UI, unique but far more about looks than usability and those looks were pretty hideous.
@nini @vga256 Satisfaction (in the sense of joy of use) is part of the definition of usability. But I know what you mean. Just sayin’
@vga256 I think I still have Bryce in a box on my shelf. Think it might be version 2, though. 😬
@Wevah i played around with v2 a few years ago - it's great!
@vga256 Oh man I loved Bryce so much!
@vga256 Odd, for some reason Bryce was on my mind as well. Apparently it is limited to 32 bit because of their serialisation system, and they don't have the budget to upgrade everything for 64 bit...
