Quick question: I was contemplating moving from the mastodon.social to another server. Given that everything is decentralised, is there any benefit in moving?
@beecham I don't know what offers mastodon.social, but I don't like when server federates with nfsw content. This is the case, for example, with pixelfed.social...
@arek I was just thinking about moving to photog.social, but the NSFW stuff is everywhere mate, sadly. At least you can hide it, but not easy

@beecham I'm on a small local instance that I love. It's not for everybody but it suits me well. The server admins take a bit more of a hand in moderating and/or defederating than the big social servers do.

I love my peaceful pocket park of a local feed, and of course I can still see the entire federated feed if and when I choose.

Others may prefer totally free speech, tolerating spam and trolls.

@oreoteeth This is all a big, massive world I've yet to wrap my head around. I'm a photographer and would probably use MD for that

@beecham I started my Mastodon experience with a burner account where I migrated multiple times before I made a "good" account using my old birdsite handle.

Maybe you'd also enjoy experimenting with other instances on an account that doesn't have your heart and soul in it. You get to try it out and check the vibes without committing to any one set of server rules.

@beecham i think you need to decide on two factors. How wide an audience you want your posts to reach. And your personal preferences for the sm experience. More tightly moderated instances will mean more defederations and smaller audiences, but less sm shit. For me less shit is the over riding priority.
