I just realized (I'm late, I know) that voicemail greetings end with a tone so that automatic callers know when to start babbling.

Which explains why all those voicemails I get from scam calls start mid-sentence. Their software is so crude that it won't wait for the tone.

@brunoph I thought it’s just because it’s not a sound that can happen with human speech so humans don’t get tricked or start talking too early

@brunoph they originally ended with a tone so that you knew when the tape had gotten up to speed and was recording!
