Tracy Chapman just won a CMA for Fast Car. She debuted the song 35 years ago and it was popularized again by Luke Combs. Here’s her singing live: https://youtu.be/yvGfVdx-gNo. Here’s Luke singing live: https://youtu.be/Fr7oYjnt3bM. #BlackFriday #BlackMastodon.

@rosanita I got to hear her perform live. The recorded versions of her work don’t come close to capturing the timbre of her voice.

Tracy wrote a perfect song. She's a beautiful performer. Love Tracy!
@rosanita Tracy Chapman is right up there as one of my all-time favourite artists. It's kind of galling that it took a white bloke covering her perfect debut song (and ruining it with that horrible country twang IMO) for it to get the recognition it has always deserved

@elldee @rosanita true. but at the 31st Grammys in 1989, this song got recognition. Chapman was named Best New Artist and took home the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Contemporary Folk Recording.

she was nominated for best song too. lost to Dont Worry Be Happy lmao wtf.

@rustoleumlove @elldee I knew about the Grammy’s. I thought it was interesting that 35 years later she won the CMA after a white guy covered it. I liked that he gave her credit and talked about how the song had affected him. But I’m not a fan of his version.
@rustoleumlove @elldee Side note: Did you know Bobby McFerrin’s daughter, Madison, is also a singer? And that Bobby McFerrin’s father was the first Black man to sing at the Met Opera?
@rosanita @elldee no,i had no idea about any of that. thanks for sharing!
@rosanita @rustoleumlove I didn't even know who Bobby McFerrin was Had to google him!

@rosanita combs' version is inferior IMO. the emotion she evokes in hers is so powerful, i can barely stand to listen to it. his feels very slightly more uptempo, & it has an almost upbeat feel to it, which is fine i guess.. but hers is far better.

that said, i suppose it's pretty cool that she is getting this recognition & making some country music history. always weird to me to still see first black person to do such & such in 2023. we'll always have work to do.
