@atpfm It isn't clear to me from episode 560 John's workflow for scanning photos. I’m not a scanning pro but have learned a few things.

John made it sound like he scanned multiple photos and then sliced up the image but I might have gotten that wrong Just in case, suggestions.

Even macOS’ built in software allows you to select each photo separately and scan each one as a separate file. Better scanning software allows you to set scan settings separately for each photo. 1/3

You should be able to find special frames to hold the photos in the scanner nice and straight. These used to come with more expensive scanner. I used to have a collection, if I had any I would offer them to John. These are really helpful if you have film, negatives or slides.

I used to use SilverFast software and when it worked it made scanning easier. But I have no reason to spend money on it. 2/3

@atpfm Anyway, still a lot of work, but the right workflow can make it easier. And better software should would help automate this work even if you have to manually replace the photos for every scan.

I learned this from a scanner salesperson who told us, his potential customers, that your workflow was more important than your hardware. Back in the day when our photographers gave us film.

Perhaps John is using the most efficient workflow, I just wasn't sure from his description.

@paulc On my scanner, it makes separate passes for each photo if you use that feature. It also isn’t great about finding the edges of the photos, but the time required for multiple passes is the real deal-killer.

@siracusa I agree on that. I think this is the case with any scanner, especially if you have separate settings per photo. But the last time I used a professional scanner was over 20 years ago. Excuse me while I feel very old.

I suspected you were doing the multi-scan, just wasn't completely sure from your description and I know many people aren't aware of this feature. I remember being showed it for the first time 20 some years ago and was blown away.
