Grand Theft Auto III is up there with my all-time favorite games, but GTA6 doesn't excite me.

Could Rockstar Games' mistreatment of its franchise be a thing of the past..?

Or will the world's most anticipated game be another vehicle for its relentless microtransactions?

Why Rockstar Games' mistreatment of the series leaves me feeling utterly unexcited for Grand Theft Auto 6

GTA6 breaks the Internet, but it's not the same for me.

@trzomb yeah I feel the same way. Maybe it's because it's been so long since the last game, or maybe it's because I'm older and more cynical about the games industry, but I can't imagine it being anything other than 'fine'. Like how Starfield was "alright - pretty good, even".
@trzomb there was a time when a new GTA game was an event, because the open world genre was new and exciting, but I kind of feel like we're long past that now. Both R* and other devs have already explored everything of value in that genre -- what can be done that hasn't already been done before? It's not even in a new city.
@trzomb So from a gameplay point of view I guess I am curious to see if they've brought any new ideas to the table, besides just making it bigger, prettier, and more complicated -- "Now you have to play a hot-wire minigame before you can steal a car!" 🙄

@trzomb BUT, even if the gameplay is great, I feel like the franchise has lost its edge.

I can't remember who pointed this out, but modern R* and GTA games have pretty much become everything the old games made fun of -- you really can't mock unrestrained capitalism while also trying to flog GTA bucks, weapon skins, and a battle pass on top of a $70 game + collector's edition + founders pack.
