Reminder: Social Security is paid for by YOU and YOUR EMPLOYER. All the federal government has to do is manage the money, not steal it, and not fuck it up! IT’S YOUR MONEY.

#GOPDebate

@DemocracyMattersALot

Republican billionaire donors want to take the retirement savings of millions and "play with it" like Bernie Madoff, Goldman-Sachs did in 2008, and Sam Bankman-Fried did last year.

Folks like Yass, Griffin, Schwarzman, Mercer, Singer, Ryan, and Mellon want to privatize public assets and make themselves rich, not to provide a secure retirement to regular Americans.

@DemocracyMattersALot Another reminder: The reason the GOP wants to cut or defund Social Security is to avoid having to pay back money they already stole from it.

@zakalwe @DemocracyMattersALot But it was much more fun for the media to make fun of poor Al Gore for talking about a "lock box" than to point out that Congress took your, yes YOUR, retirement contributions and spent them on other stuff and then turned around and said "idk for some reason SS is short of money I guess you'll need to eat cat food in your dotage."

And yes, both parties gleefully participated in looting the SS trust fund, but at least team D doesn't think you should suffer for it.

@DemocracyMattersALot Except they started putting it in the general fund a while back, because all that boomer money was sitting there not being spent on armies and stuff. Now, it’s “going broke” because those boomers are drawing out their funds. ID10Ts.
@DemocracyMattersALot
also worth recalling that money itself is a public utility belonging as a system to the whole nation to enable legitimate trade and provisioning, representing the goods and services actually and potentially in use.
@DemocracyMattersALot @katrakikas That’s broadly true of all government programs. It’s your money paving highways and hiring teachers too.
@DemocracyMattersALot
Minor nitpick: Social Security is not managed by the fed. The fed only controls the money supply by setting interest rates.

@JamesDBartlett3

Meant fed as shorthand for federal govt not federal reserve bank.

@DemocracyMattersALot if they take away soc sec, there's gonna be riot that makes Jan 6 look like babyshit! I've paid into that for 40 yrs, and have no intention of getting screwed out of it. I'm sure most people feel the same.
@mrfrisky @DemocracyMattersALot Totally agree. The federal government took the SS trust fund dollars thinking it could make better use of the stagnant funds sitting there for my future. And now the government is trillions in debt and digging the debt hole as it cut billionaire and corporate taxes in 2017 and spent debt on the pandemic and economic recovery. Now it can't reimburse the trust fund. "Screw the working class; they won't know what we did to them."
