When GitHub jumped the shark…
@stevenharman This must be a joke. I lol'd
Universe 2023: Copilot transforms GitHub into the AI-powered developer platform

GitHub is announcing general availability of GitHub Copilot Chat and previews of the new GitHub Copilot Enterprise offering, new AI-powered security features, and the GitHub Copilot Partner Program.

Yeah. Hope it's a joke. Don't see the Xeet on his Xitter. But seems very plausible based on other stuff around the launch.

And yeah, as folks say here, Microsoft appears to be going all-in on AI.

@codefolio @r343l @tenderlove it’s here: https://x.com/ashtom/status/1722313836798320715 and was also Posted on the #GitHub main Xitter feed.

Just as GitHub was founded on Git, today we are re-founded on Copilot. From the GA of Copilot Chat, to the new Copilot Enterprise, to the Copilot Partner Program and so much more – we are expanding and infusing Copilot into every aspect of GitHub. https://t.co/cRLqmYeu15

Well, GitHub had a good run.

@codefolio @r343l @tenderlove Something I've been thinking about: If there weren’t VCs and The Market™️ so thirsty for growth-at-all-costs, would all of these companies really be going so hard after “AI?”

I suspect not. There would (and should) be some investment there, but the current trend feels like a wild over-reaction/grab.

Maybe I'm wrong… it's happened before.

@stevenharman @r343l @tenderlove

Hard to say. I think there's a *fierce* worry about being made obsolete by AI. I think companies are worried that, if AI produces some giant revolution, that they'll be left useless by the wayside.

(Not unlikely that they lose even if they've been in the AI game too, but it's imaginable that their odds are better if they've been doing it from early on.)

But I think it's truly driven less by greed and more by fear right now, despite the PR messages.

@codefolio @r343l @tenderlove Yeah, that tracks. FUD, still alive and thriving here in 2023.

@stevenharman @r343l @tenderlove

And it's not 100% certain that they're wrong.

Only, like, 95% likely that they're wrong.

@stevenharman @codefolio @r343l @tenderlove normal technological bubble, no? The previous one was bitcoin, and it goes all the way back to the train... it's the way of the world.
@tenderlove I did not laugh, but my face did end up in my palms.
@tenderlove @stevenharman I asked AI if it is a joke and it is not sure
@samsaffron @tenderlove that 4th paragraph just nails it. Non-founder execs thirsty for a way to show their “impact.”

@stevenharman WTAF 😳

I'm quite satisfied having *never* used Copilot, and probably never will.

@stevenharman @tenderlove Reminds me of 90s Microsoft announcing interneting was so important to Windows that your file manager and web browser were now the SAME APPLICATION, just called Explorer.
@stevenharman Hm. This might be time to migrate to GitLab...
@Crell Who now call themselves "the AI-powered DevSecOps Platform?"
@stevenharman yikes. That's one hell of a pivot from open source...
@stevenharman All your base IP are belong to us.

@stevenharman

I guess it's time to download archives of all of my starred repositories "just in case" 😒

@stevenharman how git turned version control (a moderately complex activity) into a very complex activity while becoming wildly popular will be a tale to tell!
