If you look closely you can see the mandiblular tomia or tomial tooth, a notch at the end of the mandible with a corresponding notch on the lower bill that the Loggerhead shrike uses to sever the spines of its prey. These structures are usually found on raptors but the shrike has them too. They lack the strong sharp talons of raptors so they’re known for impaling prey on spiky branches or barbed wire.
