So part of my job is as a theory tutor at a local community college. I just can't wait until the folks working on a music degree get to learn about N6 chords. The one thing everyone knows about N6 chords is that you forget them as soon as you're out of theory. But I genuinely love the little things.
They're like these great little moment of uncertainty thrown into the harmony of a piece. Because either one of two things is about to or has just happened, a modulation to a different key or the composer is extending the tensions before finally resolving it. Until you get the context of the next chord, you have no idea which one you're hearing
Studies have shown that one of the things people like most about music is when they can generally guess what's about to happen, but have times where something new takes them by surprise. With that bit uncertainty, N6 chords are just a fun little way to force the listener to make a prediction.
