"We can't accept this digital document."

*prints out the page*

"Ah yes, this is legal proof."

German federal agencies, 2023.

@Natanox I forgot the name, but someone made a tool that converts a PDF document into a PDF document that looks like it was printed and then scanned, to get it accepted by German authorities.
@fell @Natanox there's two tools I know and I think both are called variations of "look scanned". One is at lookscanned.io 😊
@fell @Natanox Apart from the already mentioned lookscanned.io (https://github.com/rwv/lookscanned.io) what about using a simple bash script: https://gist.github.com/andyrbell/25c8632e15d17c83a54602f6acde2724

@Micha @fell @Natanox There is also a very cool web service for this purpose 😁

https://lookscanned.io/

Look Scanned

Look Scanned is a pure frontend site that makes your PDFs look scanned! No need for printers and scanners anymore - everything you need to do is just a few clicks.

@Micha @fell @Natanox Ah, now I see it was already mentioned in the other comments.

@maestro_alubia
Don't know if it's a good idea to send private documents to some random website.

@Micha @fell @Natanox

@nehrka @Micha @fell @Natanox Generally I would agree. In this case it is open source and runs offline. So you can turn off your internet and convert the document if you want to make sure it does not leave your computer.

@Natanox No No No. Print IT and then send a Fax....👆
@Natanox My favourite of these was once when I was told "We can't accept this digital document, but we can accept an emailed photo of a document" so I took a photo of my screen showing the digital document and emailed that instead. Much larger (data-wise) and less useful, but they accepted it.
@Natanox that's probably because the corresponding law still requires a hand written signature. The buzzword is "Schriftformerfordernis" and the only way to compliantly work around this is using the electronic ID on your Perso. So yes, the federal agency is likely also breaking the law with this procedure. See BSI TR-03107-2 for the nerdy details.
@Natanox @kbusse I hate the electronic id of the perso I hate it a lot

@Natanox

Sounds familiar.

And, equally sadly: also the other way round (not at all uncommon:

present a perfectly fine printout of a "digital" covid vaccine certificate or railway ticket, just to be told it's "not valid" and even threatened* by the #kontrolletti because it's not on a screen ...)

* actually happened to a friend

@Natanox die Unterschrift muss mit dokumentenechter Tinte nach ISO 12757-2 erfolgen lmao
@Natanox I've heard nightmare stories about some Spanish public servants only accepting printed documents that were signed with blue ink pens and having marks of having been folded "to prove that they had been signed by hand, because who knows if that block signature was also printed".
@Natanox reminds me of when my partner was trying to update their state ID, the office needed a copy of the driving record, so I had to download a PDF and use an online fax service to fax it to them
@Natanox
You can not use a stamp on a digital document.
That's the only point.
