If I had a spare lifetime to live, I would love to train as an economist just to see how (if) they learn about norms. This is Kearney, going out on a limb. Just cracks me up
@philipncohen Theory related to norms is not taught in any core econ training I am aware of (as an economist). They are the kind of thing people probably talk about/learn about as they show up in papers, research contexts, etc.
@philipncohen I should clarify it's not taught in any orthodox econ training I am aware. I am unsure about heterodox departments.
@ZOEconomy @philipncohen I think historically the idea that preferences could be socially structured was anathema, because it undermines classical microeconomics (particularly but by no means only the Austrian flavour). However, modern economics is much more eclectic and pragmatic (and as soon as there is an economist whose writings on norms they can cite, they'll do it).
