The comment about it being dominated by rich streamers, who could afford the entry + could train full-time, definitely made me draw parallels between them and duelling knights of yore, who were usually part of the nobility.

It would be nice to see some more random contenders from more mixed backgrounds

They had a month to level to 60 and gear up, most normal people aren’t into wasting a month to enter a tournament with practically no odds of getting anything. If you die in the tournament your character is done, so naturally the contestants are largely going to be people with some confidebce and time to spare.
So just sweaty streamers and basement dwellers. Yeah that’s a competition 👍
That is a lot of resentment for someone making money off a hobby. Do you cry about people making money in chess tournaments too?
