It's interesting that for all the time activists spend arguing about ads and cookies on the Internet (OH, THE HORRORS!), so many appear to be utterly oblivious to BIPARTISAN federal legislation that would mandate age verification with government IDs to access social media (as a starting point), effectively destroying any level of "anonymity" on the Net. Versions of such laws are already in force in Louisiana related to adult materials, and a broader set of laws passed in Utah and I believe is in force while being litigated, last time I checked. And this is just the beginning.
@lauren Utah’s governor expects challenges. Bill goes into effect next March. Critics think the data will be abused.

@stevewfolds @lauren I'm curious how this Utah Social Media law would apply to Mastodon and/or the Fediverse

Most/All servers are not companies, and anyone can spin up a new server if they want...

#SocialMediaLaw #UtahLaw #AgeVerification

@mlippert @stevewfolds Nobody knows. Fair chance these won't make it beyond SCOTUS, even this SCOTUS.
