I wrote about YouTube's war on adblockers, why it's so important, and how it could get worse at any moment if Google chooses to escalate even further

YouTube's ‘War’ on Adblockers Shows How Google Controls the Internet

Google's anti-ad scripts are breaking browsers and privacy plugins. It could get worse because Google controls the ad market, Chrome, and the extension store.

@jasonkoebler I get a DNS error trying to access this.
@thatprivacyguy hmmm ... that's concerning ... if you still have page up can i see what it says?
@jasonkoebler it loaded this time - failed 3 times prior though.
@jasonkoebler I presume you have also seen the ironic YouTube advertising adblockers screenshots which have been doing the rounds on Reddit for the past couple of days?
@jasonkoebler
I think we're definitely now seeing the pitfalls of having one "dumping ground for user video" essentially. This is partly why I don't want to make videos, you're too much at the whims of one platform for income. We definitely need a few alternatives. I'm surprised a few specialist streaming services don't routinely snatch up a few creators that YouTube doesn't seem to serve well and are going to be the ones who get hit by this.
@jasonkoebler with the android app New Pipe I've been seeing this for sometime. As it's a FOSS app that allows one to not have ads, download videos or audio versions they are constantly battling YouTube. It's uses web scraping and the APIs that the webapp itself relies on it's an uphill battle for YouTube to stop it
@jasonkoebler Sounds fine to me. I spend way too much time on YouTube; if they make me spend less on it I'd be better off.
@jasonkoebler I'm interested to see how far YouTube pushes this and if the community starts jumping to something like the new Patreon Video platform. Seems like YouTube has pissed off basically everybody except the investors at this point.

@jasonkoebler Was reading the beginning of your article on YouTube blocking ads - something I previously tweaked my settings to avoid - until I ran into your paywall...

More annoyances, wasting my time and making the internet less useful.

@KraftTea this is my career and the way I pay my rent. I am not a multitrillion dollar corporation and we have no funding except our readers.

@jasonkoebler Indeed.

And, like YouTube, your business model is not my problem.

If you put content on the internet that isn't open, I will gladly treat it as damage and route around it.

Thankfully, there are other journalists who are less internet-breaking. I read them every day!

@KraftTea that is fine; I don’t care if you read it or not. Do what you want
