Wow, one of my PhD students spotted an APC scam. A paper that had been accepted to a journal and went online triggered a scam email that asked for the Article Processing Charges (>$3000) to an email address that used the name of the journal but at gmail.com . I can see how people at a very early stage of publication can fall for it. Be careful #phdchat #openscience #openaccess

@mhaklay thank you very much. This is very helpful. Academics are always operating on waifer thin funds and scams like these make it so much harder.

@mhaklay Kudos to your student for pointing out this scam! It really is alarming how scammers can exploit the exorbitant Article Processing Charges in academia. These fees, which may or may not be the actual scams themselves, certainly put researchers at risk of falling victim to phishing attempts...
