28 October 1940 | During the afternoon roll-call a prisoner was found missing. A penal roll-call was ordered. Prisoners had to stand “at attention” in their uniforms but without coats, jackets, hats or shoes. It was sleeting the whole day.

The roll-call was called off around 9 pm after the missing prisoner was found. He had tried to hid from the rain and died in his hiding place in the camp.

After the roll-call 120 dead, unconscious or sick prisoners were collected from the roll-call square.

@auschwitzmuseum Forgiveness is a very difficult virtue - images like this are a heartbreaking reminder that even though not all Germans were Nazi’s - the population at large turned a blind eye to what was being done in their name.
