The Pit of Saron is where the scourge is enslaving people to dig up big blobs of Saronite. It is used as an ore to craft things, but it isn't a naturally occurring metal... it's the blood of the old god Yogg-Saron (final boss in Ulduar). There's a questline in Howling Fjord where you encounter Dwarves that have been driven mad by mining the ore, and when you carry samples around they whisper to you. Spooky.
