My dad just came into the room where I’m working and said:

“There’s a new person at work…He’s a she. I mean… She is a she… Now. We’re supposed to call her that now.”

[long pause]

“Anyway… I don’t care about this gender, pronoun, stuff. It’s not my business. All that matters is that she’s very helpful.”

[dad pauses thoughtfully]

“She’s a good colleague… Don’t understand all this fuss about people’s gender these days. She works hard and is always friendly. This media malarkey… About what’s in their pants. Don’t make sense to me.”

“These ‘journalists’ should spend a day with her and see the trans people are good and honest regular folk.”

I'm a parent with a non-binary lesbian kid myself.

The way you describe that conversation (particularly that he did it away from your other parent) just screams intentionality.

Sounds like you got a good one, and he's giving you a green light to talk _to him_ about it.

That's just my read etc.

That is roughly how I communicate with my son(18). I honestly don't know yet, where he is positioning himself. He thinks I'm a typical straight CIS guy – sure enough mostly right ;). However I always tell him my personal experiences eg. with trans poc, pointing out what cool artists are non CIS, or how much club music is influenced by LGBTQIA+ culture.
The reason: Not only to teach respect. Just in case he comes out as LGBTQIA+, he can do so, feeling comfortable.

You don't actually need to capitalize 'cis'. It's a Latin prefix meaning "the same side", which is an antonym of 'trans' meaning "the other side".

So, for example, before the events of _Bello Gallico_, Rome controlled Cisalpine Gaul ("Gaul on this site of the Alps"), and Caesar made his name conquering Transalpine Gaul ("Gaul on the other side of the Alps").

Another example is cis-benzene (where both ends of the ring bend in the same direction, looks like a paper boat) and trans-benzene where the ends of the ring bend in opposite directions (looks like a deck chair halfway reclined).

So cis animals' gender lines up with the majority of their primary sex characteristics, and trans animals' gender does not.
