UPDATE

John Miller/#CNN analyst:

It's now known Robert Card used to go to the bowling alley & bar he shot up yesterday w/ his former girlfriend, who was expected to be at the bar at a special event. His being fired from his job & breakup w/his girlfriend last summer are thought to be major contributing factors.

@ginaintheburg So we get a side order of attempted femicide with the carnage.

@Nazani

I see where you're coming from, but not sure how I come down on that. It's not like he may have wanted to kill her just because she's a woman, but because the combination of his mental illness, losing her and his job made him feel like his life was falling apart. He may have felt she abandoned him when he needed her to support him most. We don't know all the details yet. He also had threatened to shoot up the base he had been working at, so it's pretty complicated.

@ginaintheburg
You clearly know more about the sequence of events than I do. I thought he was employed as a firearms instructor & also still in the Reserves. I'm still gonna posit that his sense of entitlement as a macho man was outraged by her leaving him. We'll see.

@Nazani

I just know & post what I hear on the news. This seems more like a complicated matter that includes domestic violence.

Given his mental illness, he may have been in a fugue state, and may still be. Turns out from what I found on Google yesterday, fugue states can last for years, tho they're usually a whole lot briefer. Not condoning it, think he was in a lot of pain, tried to eliminate a major source of it.

@Nazani

You may be completely correct about his male sense of entitlement - I'm certainly personally familiar with that undesirable, destructive dynamic - and I'm open to that being the case in the end. Maybe it's the old psych major in me speaking, but I am getting an image of an underachiever with a failure complex complicated by a more serious neuro pathology.
