Hello #fediverse.

Yesterday in #Lewiston, #Maine, a shooter killed 16 people and wounded many more. The shooter is still at large and many Maine residents in Lewiston and nearby communities are still under a shelter in place order.

We have one reporter in Lewiston and our colleagues at Maine Public are covering this story. https://www.mainepublic.org/

In situations like these, I commend to your attention the Breaking News Consumer's Handbook.

Breaking news events are confusing and frightening. Early reports often include things that we later learn are wrong or not related. This guide intended to help you make sense of what you are reading and hearing. https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/articles/breaking-news-consumers-handbook-pdf

The Breaking News Consumer's Handbook | On the Media | WNYC Studios

Rampant misreporting following shootings and other breaking news events is so predictable that we unintentionally developed a formula for covering them.

@gbhnews @aardvark I’ve been sending that around for years. On the Media created it IIRC.

This is from 2013 before rampant AI and such but still relevant.

I miss it when we included "these are the facts as we understand them;" it always mentioned an awareness to the lack of information that comes with new events.

Or maybe that was a movie thing and we always ended up making them sound more honest than they were
