American here - I expect it’s the same there, where if you’d like to get a new job, or keep a job, a phone is vital. Google Voice is lovely and all, but… It doesn’t actually connect the call to me, and that’s a problem when boss/hiring manager is calling. Or when your kids’ school is calling. Or a doctor. Or… Yeah.

Google Voice isn’t available in the UK. I tried installing it the other day.
