So I signed up for Threads on day 1, and have mostly been active since they added search, but I'm not totally happy with it. Like many people, I've been using it thinking it will inevitably end up with the most users and therefore be the main Twitter replacement.

But I kinda had this realization: Facebook + Instagram also have tons of users, and I'm sure some people really enjoy them, but they're pretty irrelevant culturally. Like, screenshots from Twitter get posted everywhere, links and embeds of tweets were ubiquitous, but nobody posts a screenshot of a FB post except to mock some ignorant mom group. And TikTok is currently the main driver of trends and memes, its content gets talked about and reposted everywhere, but no one talks about something that popped off on FB or IG.
So I feel like Threads might be the same: tons of users, but nothing happening. Their aversion to "news" and dragging their feet on chronological search results is not helping that perception.

There's plenty of nice art + photography that gets cross-posted, but in terms of discourse it kinda feels like a breakout chat for Instagram users. Just people whose main community is IG-based (artists, crafters, fiction writers, lifestyle bloggers) making small talk about nothing, which is indeed "wholesome" but also quite boring.
it is funny tho to see people from Twitter sign up for Threads and post some controversial take all geared up to fight and.... nobody cares LOL
