Currently there isn't a model that has 'solved it' although we at Signal are working to expand our small donations into a source of sustaining revenue. Mozilla is funded largely by Google, Linux by large tech cos, Signal by donations including a large and generous contribution from Brian Acton.

I'm studying what might be the complementary problem of what (moral/philosophical) values can combine with practices to support a more sustainable model.
