Back when we played the 1812 overture in high school, one of the music teachers did the canons by firing shotgun blanks into an oil drum, on stage, and I still can’t believe they let them do that.
@alexwild Surely someone in the school community in Texas would have owned a cannon?
@ProfundumPhoto Texas, yes. But this was in New York.
@alexwild Unlikely someone's going to make a sudden move on the Alamo in New York, so less need for a household cannon.
@ProfundumPhoto @alexwild I remember playing it in Jr high and one of the local cops was firing blanks backstage
@scrummy @alexwild Doonesbury from about 1975, after Duke, the newly-appointed Ambassador to China, is invited to an opera in Beijing.
@alexwild "A well regulated scool orchestra, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear cannons, shall not be infringed."
@alexwild one of my most unbelievable anecdotes is that the first time I fired a gun was at a school. The high school had a fully functioning shooting range in the gymnasium building. Late 80s.
