"Previous experience tells us people will seek out the brands of the guns. A lack of direct branding helps to shield us from implications of a direct endorsement while still receiving benefit from inclusion in the game."

So basically they’re doing a Tobacco.

How one gun company partnered with Call of Duty to attract 'young potential shooters'

Newly released documents from a firearms conglomerate show how the arms industry uses games to market its wares.

PC Gamer

@Haste OFC they do that.

You can definitely see that in games whenever they use the "real name" [i.e. Colt 1911A1] vs some no-name derivation that is clearly designed to avoid any trademarks [i.e. "AR-16" in Far Cry 2]

@kkarhan I always assumed the game companies were paying to use the likeness, but it looks like it might be the other way around

@Haste it is the other way around.

For example, since HK apparently didn't sponsor #CallOfDuty #BlackOps & #BlackOpsColdWar they didn't brand the #MP5's as such but gave them some different name they made up...

[Also it really gets me to laugh that they made GDR police have said MP5's in BOCW when in fact that never happened prior to GDR being unified into the FRG.

@Haste well fuck, thats vile....
