Can't help wondering if key concepts and practices in software development might be easier to learn if authors didn't feel pressure to stretch those ideas to fill books.

I cannot speak to it's accuracy, but it was a standing joke at my university (in Denmark) that American textbooks were ridiculously verbose, apparently because they were paid by word count.
I don't know if that's the actual, but everyone knew that the text body of the American ones, you could just read superficially as the same point would be made *many* times.
