International politics have devolved to gangsters and warlordism and a lot of it has to do with the US and Russia undermining the UN on behalf of their client states.
Obviously, the US, Russia, and China have essentially exempted themselves from international law by virtue of veto power, size, wealth, and military force, leaving the UN toothless in most matters.
There are multiple genocidal campaigns going on around the world right now and they are largely being permitted to happen out of apathy and so as not to step one of the big three's toes.
In the looming future of resource wars and climate refugees, it's hard to imagine any other outcome than a global bloodbath because there are effectively no guardrails in place to stop it.

"Might makes right" is pretty much the order of the day.

Fascism is rising up everywhere as ethnic nationalist groups and billionaire gangster-oligarchs compete for control of territory, politics, money, resources.

If you don't have a massive military and the power of the state behind you, even in your own home country, you're in deep shit.

@gwynnion as always, fascism rears its head when capitalism is in crisis. As the repercussions of global capital continue to come home to roost, we will continue to see an upswing in reactionary, fascistic rhetoric and policy.
@malkavon @gwynnion
It's almost like fascism is the backstop to an antidemocratic economy

@gwynnion

Spot on, on every point you made.

The only (morbid) consolation is - even the elites and gangster oligarchs can't save themselves from the ticking climate/ecological time bomb.

It'll all be over with in 50 years or less.

Spend your time wisely until then.

@gwynnion I guess I don't really understand what you are saying. Are you saying that the U.S. should intervene more in conflicts worldwide?
@lightninhopkins I'm saying the US, Russia, and China, to preserve their Great Power status and respective spheres of influence, have destabilized global politics by granting themselves and their client states virtual impunity under international law, undermining the UN and its ability to prevent conflicts, to the point even many smaller states simply do as they please.

@gwynnion Ah, OK. I get what you are saying now.

I am not sure who would enforce International Law and how they would do it without force.

@gwynnion The Israelis and Palestinians are not going to stop fighting to appease the UN.
@lightninhopkins Well, the point in the Israeli case is the US has unilaterally supported them and shielded them from international sanctions and other measures for quite some time, while also refusing to apply any necessary pressure themselves to encourage peace. The US is complicit in the perpetuation of the conflict.
@gwynnion The US also funds the Palestinians. The idea being that if they can stabilize the groups then there can be peace talks.
@gwynnion Also the conflict was happening long before the US was involved. If the US decided to end all support for Israel tomorrow it would not end the conflict.

@gwynnion

Yes. It’s Hell.when will the understanding of humanity reach critical mass and the vast majority refuse to allow this evil and senseless destruction?
