Saskatchewan government tables school pronoun bill, invokes notwithstanding clause - Lemmy.world

The notwithstanding clause allows provincial governments to pass laws which infringe on Canadians fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It’s a clause that shouldn’t exist and any laws that need to invoke the notwithstanding clause are terrible laws.

Dougie really broke the dam with his frivilous use of it.

Used to be that everyone understood that it was a last resort, to be used in extreme circumstances where there wasnt time for debates and amendments to acheive the common good.

But what did he use it for? To try and force through back-to-work legislation instead of barganing in good faith with Ontario’s education workers.

Now you have Legault using it to push through bills 21 & 94, and Scott Moe is using to force through a bill that will endanger transgender kids so he can score points with the bigots in his province.
