I used to regularly drink at the Princess Louise in Holborn. Glorious (but run down) gin palace. Two seperate heritage preservation listings - one for the upstairs. one for the Victorian-era urinals.

ANYWAY

when the smoking ban came in, the brewery LITERALLY closed it for a whole year to renovate it fully.

Asked the landlord why.

"Mate, you don't want to know what this place smells like without 300 years of smoke to cover it."

@garius @Nicovel0 @sarajw @cstross @DreadShips @jimh @lauren Sounds like my kind of place. I still can recall that lovely aroma of stale beer, fags and sweat when you walked past a London pub with its doors open first thing in the morning on your way to school in the 50’s and 60’s.
