This answer by Tony Fauci in a recent @sciencemagazine intervieiw by Jon Cohen is...something.

From the late 80s-on, Fauci repeatedly kneecapped efforts to study ME/CFS at NIH. This has been extensively documented, c.f. the book "Osler's Web."

Now he's saying if he began his career over he'd study...ME/CFS.

It's great he's finally realized the huge opportunity here to help a large group of sick people.

Shame it took him until after retirement to figure it out.

I smell regulatory capture by a special interest. The special interest for ME/CFS is pretty obviously the payers of disability income (national and private) around the globe. My back of the envelope is fair and proper handling of ME/CFS claims which have accumulated over the last 30 years would cost payers in the West at least US$5 trillion. Even the national programs don't have it.

If Fauci suspected, but was constrained, he could speak only after retirement
