Continues to age like fine wine, like 15 years later
@EposVox totally believed it was recent until I saw ur headline

@EposVox missing alt text:

A black and white political cartoon, showing a man in an US flag top hat and shades buying a box labelled "US Gov" and "Control of Internet Speech". The store clerk, a white man in a suit labelled "Corporate Media", is asking the customer how they want their package wrapped. On the wall in the back, there are two possible wraps to choose from: "anti-terrorism", with US flags print, and "protect children", with flowers, cats, rabbits, and otherwise kid-themed prints

@EposVox and also we now have fascist propaganda wrapped into „Internet ‚free‘ speech“.
@EposVox
IMHO this fits into category conspiracy theories.
Free speech makes only sense if it doesn't hurt or negatively influence others, ergo free speech must have boundaries.
@amarok
@EposVox But these boundaries must be enforced only by independent courts - not by governments (executive power) or even by private companies.
@amarok @EposVox
Yeah, the cartoon only works if you believe in a fantasy world where terrorists and groomers don't aggressively use the internet as a recruiting tool.

@amarok @EposVox ???

Not a conspiracy theory, literally the presentation of about a dozen failed internet speech regulation bills, all on the public record. Free speech does have limits in the US, but these bills generally go hilariously beyond established precedent.

@EposVox, it’s that time of the year again?
@EposVox We could also write mass surveillance on the box.
@EposVox The global internet should treat everyone with fairness, equality of opportunity so that it can be rational.
@EposVox
#accessibility picture of uncle Sam in sunglasses with a box labeled "Control of Internet Speech". The store clerk next to him asked "How would you like that wrapped?". In the background are two rolls of wrapping paper. One labelled "Protecting children", the other labelled "Fighting terrorism"
@yorgos

@EposVox

just tried to add the latest twitch of the European Commission 😉

@EposVox every once in a while you get the mixture - protecting kids from terrorists.
@EposVox It still works today, although 15 years ago I would have naively thought that individuals having their own media would be so much better than corporate-owned media.
@EposVox Sadly true. 🥸🥺😒
@EposVox image description (you may be able to update your post to make it more accessible): political cartoon shows a man in a suit labeled “corporate media” asking the US’s Uncle Sam how he’d like a box labeled “control of internet speech.” The wrapping paper options are labeled “anti-terrorism” (patriotic flags and stars print) and “protect kids” (kitties, bunnies, and flowers print for the wrapping paper)
"CONGRESS shall make no law...abridging freedo of speech"
Don't say nothin' about what corporations can do.
Of course, when those corportions are de facto monopolies, we have another issue to deal with, but that is one of free trade and freedom choice rather than free speech
