Matt Gaetz files resolution to oust McCarthy as speaker

Speaker Kevin McCarthy is facing an extraordinary referendum on his leadership of the House after Rep. Matt Gaetz, a longtime critic, moved to launch a vote to oust him from the helm. Gaetz, a far-right Republican from Florida, rose in the chamber Monday as the House was almost done for the day to file the motion. McCarthy responded minutes later on social media, “Bring it on.” The resolution would set a snap vote in coming days that even Gaetz acknowledges may not have enough support to remove the speaker from the job. Only a handful of hard-right Republicans have signaled they are willing to vote to remove McCarthy.
