“New research indicates that there may be a whole host of toxic chemicals being shed from tires & brakes that have been largely ignored until now. Even worse, these emissions may be so significant that they exceed those from a typical car's exhaust.”

Tire Dust Makes Up the Majority of Ocean Microplastics, Study Finds

Recent studies have shown tire emissions to be a larger threat to global health than anyone realized—and EVs could make the problem worse.

@ScratchinPro so the kids playgroud that uses shredded tire bits instead of wood chips might not be a good idea after all... Well, if the terrible smell of it didn't give it away.

@aeischeid Exactly.

Particulate material in the air affects negatively the learning brain.

It's just like those laminated products made with the "recycled" terrible #TetraBriks, only displacing problems to other vulnerable actors in the ecosystem.

@aeischeid @ScratchinPro Can't imagine it's all that 'good' no. But the 'dust' here is the wearing of them against the road surface. I wouldn't think that part would be particularly a problem for kids use.

Tires do however have more than a few other things about them that probably do make it a very bad choice!

@ScratchinPro The only gripe I have is that EVs will make the problem significantly worse. EVs will be smaller on average than the behemoth SUVs being driven today. So while they may produce 20% more than an equivalent sized car, it won't be as much more than the Suburbans they more accurately compare against.

Chevy Bolt 3600 lbs
Suburban 5,824 lbs

The correct answer is better mass transit instead of individual vehicles...but sadly we're not likely to go that route anytime soon.
