I used to sell shoes. Most customers would come in and immediately say "I'm looking for shoes for work" to which I would answer "what kind of work?".

Many would name an occupation, but others would stare at me then say "work!". Then I would gently coax out of them "Does the work involve walking on wet surfaces? Is potential chemical or electric shock exposure involved? Is there a uniform or dress code? Indoors, out or a combination?" while they're frustratedly saying "no, no, none of that, they're for WORK! For going to work!"

They invariably meant office work.

This never happened with a plumber, doctor or driver in five years, but it would happen with office workers every week.
