I've been experimenting with animated visualizations of multi-layer networks. This is Krackhardt's tech manager data: the black network in the foreground shows the company hierarchy, the underlying links show who the managers (nodes) think others go to for advice, and the order of the layers is sorted by visual similarity (which by necessity is pretty big in this case).
@pholme the animation is cool but I think it's too much information for the brain to process in real time, especially when the nodes are abstract entities. maybe it would be better with some kind of embedding "map" when possible.
@zabow The context is that I want to compare different multilayer networks. For this example alone small-multiples plots of all layers work better. But if you put two small multiple plots side by side it's not intuitive how to compare them (not sure if this will be better, but that's the goal).
