@librarianshipwreck Much easier than that. If a device claims to be 'smart', avoid it like the plague and never allow one in your home. The only reason they are 'smart' are so they can spy on you.
@bytebro @librarianshipwreck when my spouse and I moved in together my mom offered us an old smart TV (not a fancy or expensive one, but one that came out in the last however many years) and she genuinely didn't understand, as people who own no smart TVs and don't have the money to buy one, why on Earth we would turn that down
but nooo thank you! we still need a little work to get smart devices out of our life (or, I guess, to alter existing smart devices so they're less creepy, in the case of phones and computers) but we've definitely been rejecting any new "opportunities" to get more of them
