> Throwaway, but I work at Bandcamp. We're all very frightened and don't know what the future holds. We were told that some, but not all, will get offers from Songtradr and it may be up to a month before we receive an offer. It's pretty depressing.

Bandcamp has been sold to Songtradr. What does this mean for the musicians? | Hacker News

@davidgerard So sorry about this. The digital content world has descended into an unholy mess.
@davidgerard oh for fuck's sake. so sorry to hear about that; and of course it's a move calculated to push people out.
@mawhrin @davidgerard literally only months after they unionized too. fuck Epic Megagames and fuck Tim Sweeney
@davidgerard fucking damn it, I was actually planning to switch to Bandcamp as my main listening platform (and buy a lot more albums). I should have expected this kind of shit from Tim Sweeney’s presumably clammy, definitely fascist hands being around Bandcamp’s neck
@zzt it's the Rough Trade Shop for the 2020s. There is not really an alternative as yet - anyone can set up a web store for FLACs, but Bandcamp has made all the pieces work.
@davidgerard exactly! streamlining purchases, high quality downloads, and streaming (as much as I love FLACs, sometimes I just need to press the button in my car that makes the music happen) is the hard bit. I really would love an open source alternative, but it’d definitely take a long time to achieve the same kind of feature set
@davidgerard again with the Wiltshire should come out immediately and tell us his thoughts...
@davidgerard you'd hope they would sort that kind of thing out as part of the legal documents
@davidgerard If you follow that subthread, there's some interactions from a current SongTradr dev and the bandcamp employee and it looks like this might be much more positive than when Epic bought them.
