@mastohost hello there! Was wondering if there was a way to host on mastohost and then if I wanted to in the future, migrate off onto a VPS like AWS or something. Or vice versa, from a VPS to mastohost?

Looking to host a server but I’m not sure I want to fully manage it or not quite yet.

Please let me know, thanks!

@breadandwater Hello, yes you can migrate in and out of Masto.host whenever you like.

On Masto.host you have access to generate and download a full backup to migrate all your server data with everything you need to migrate to a different hosting solution.

To migrate from self-hosting to Masto.host is a manual process, so a day/time needs to be arranged in advance.

Any questions, let me know.

@mastohost when you say migrate from self-host needs a day to be arranged in advanced do you mean cause of the instance downtime or do I need to specifically arrange/coordinate with masto.host?

Thanks for the quick reply!

@breadandwater it's because the import process on my end is manual. So, you either need to send me the data or provide me access to the server. To do a migration without losing any data (local or federated) Mastodon needs to be stopped. So, that needs to be planned in advance because if you send me the data out of the blue and I have no time to do the import in the next week, then the server is down for a week. Plus the domain DNS needs to be updated to point to Masto.host.

@mastohost yep, understood. Thank you so much for the info!

I think it makes most sense to use masto.host and see how it goes. Need to weigh all the options. Appreciate the quick replies. Have a great day!

@breadandwater Sure, sounds good. Have a great day too :)
