I'm looking to hear your experiences using any of the optional rules in the Dungeon Master’s Workshop chapter of the #DnD5e Dungeon Master's Guide.

I'll start. We used the **Gritty Realism** rest variant (short rest of 8 hours and a long rest of 7 days) for a multi-year campaign. Verdict? An excellent way to enforce the theme. Not overbearing but definitely affected decisions throughout the game.

@phd20 I love gritty realism.

It creates the pace of a novel

@phd20 I used the "Healing Surge" rules for a small party of 3 PCs. It worked well to keep them alive in the early levels but once their druid reached 9th level it became unnecessary and we dropped it.

@phd20 Using "Gritty Realism" made a whole bunch of spells and class abilities useless or much more situational without tweaking their durations to match the updated rest cycles.

IMO, the better option to run a fantasy game with a lower power level is to just run a different system.
