Talking to LLM researchers about ethics be like:

@MarcSchulder @paulwilson Here we are again with capitalism.

"I don't want to make a healthier, happier world. That's not a sustainable business model. I want to create a constant stream of revenue!"

This is why we don't have cures but instead have an endless supply of treatments.

"Don't fix the problem! Instead, provide temporary solutions to stop the bleeding that can be delivered on a predictable basis. And cash checks."

@elight @MarcSchulder @paulwilson The reason why we don't have cures for everything is because our bodies (and the world which they inhabit) are incredibly complex. Before the treatments were developed, people just lived miserably and died quickly.

I'm not a huge fan of capitalism. There's a plethora of examples from medicine of negative societal outcomes directly caused by the profit motive.

That we don't have miracle cures for everything is not one of them.

@tob @MarcSchulder @paulwilson Speaking metaphorically, if not with the best metaphors. There are many enormous problems in the world. Many of those problems only persist because the richest aren't willing to be less rich.
