Earlier this year an area of public land comprising 54sq m of the People’s Park (also known as Bishop Lucey Park) was sold to the Freemasons for the princely sum of €1. This action came after a vote by the Cork City Council that went in favour of the “sale” by 18 votes to 7.

The reason for such a miniscule figure is the simple fact that it is illegal for the council to give public land away for free.

Any public access to the Freemason’s building would be allowed only on their terms and convenience. This stands in stark contrast to the right of access to the park which is owned by the people of the city and not by a secretive, misogynist, elitist old man’s club.
