This is Handmaid’s Tale stuff. We are the dystopia now.

I remember when even anti-abortion politicians were careful to say they would never criminalize the pregnant women. Now Nebraska is imprisoning a mother who helped her teenage daughter with an abortion pill.

US mother sentenced to two years in prison for giving daughter abortion pills

Jessica Burgess pleaded guilty in July to providing an abortion after 20 weeks and tampering with human remains

The Guardian
@JamesGleick This was under pre-existing laws before Roe v Wade was overturned.
@mark So?
@JamesGleick So “We are the dystopia now” does not make sense. Unless we have been in a dystopia already for many years.
@mark It says here you’re from Waterford, Ireland—what a lovely place! Ireland has had its troubles with the treatment of women, to be sure, but you have sensibly made abortion legal. In my own benighted country, I don’t know if you’ve heard, a savage right-wing minority is imposing a regimen of new laws taking away women’s reproductive rights and threatening them with dire punishments. Today’s is one barbaric example.

@JamesGleick No problem with any of that, I’m just a bit of a stickler for headlines matching the content of a linked article, as it were.

Hopefully democracy will do its thing and majority views will prevail over this savage minority.

Anyway, let’s leave it there, because it looks like you’re a bit famous, and there’s a risk of a pile on if I mince words, which I’m not up for.

@JamesGleick
Well, after all the Bible gives them the right to be cruel. It says -- oh wait! It says "Judge not lest ye be judged."
@JamesGleick in germany, the limit is 22 weeks. 2 weeks more than nebraska.

@JamesGleick

Sorry I can’t cite the social post where I first read this, but someone observed that heck yes conservatives will indict women who terminate pregnancies, because women tend to vote for Democrats, and conservatives like to disenfranchise Democratic voters by convicting them of felonies.

@patrickgillam Not a very good plan for the Putin rebib's, Talk about losing you're base!
@JamesGleick @GeekAndDad yes, yes it is. It’s super unnerving to watch this unfold.

@JamesGleick

#KochNetwork spent decades manufacturing this felony disenfranchisement scheme for women voters.

Evangelicals & Catholics were used to attack the civil rights of women & conned into joining an anti-democracy movement.

They do not have the right to impose their fascist values on others.

The "war on drugs" disenfranchised millions of POC, and the "war on abortion & contraception" will disenfranchise millions of women.

Nebraska is anti-democracy.

@JamesGleick Their fanaticism is exceeded only by their dishonesty.

But that's how fascism rolls...

@JamesGleick Lies, they were never careful. They used synecdoches and, like always, prayed we wouldn't be paying attention. But the flies following the cattle that we always are could clearly see the entire picture and knew this was coming. We should be asking questions about how we've even allowed it to get this far. The obvious question now: what are we going to do to protect this woman?
@JamesGleick didn't Texas charged a women that got an abortion with murder?
