Gollum fishing

I thought the ring had the power to control itself and affect reality to a limited degree. Isn’t there something about if you keep it in your pocket, it will find some way to fall out and make its way to a new, more useful person? If they tried this trick, I’d expect it to find some way to come loose without them realizing it.
