Apple always does this before a big launch. Most likely they are applying site updates, major patches, etc.

Side note: thanks to Apple Card changes, this is the first phone I won’t be preordering.

Launch time is 8AM EST. You think Apple can’t have the “updates” ready well before? Lmao that’s not an excuse.
I don’t think this is that crazy. Avoids customers making mistakes, like someone could very easily place an order for an iPhone thinking it’s the new one before the keynote.
Hold up, what Apple Card changes?
If you make payments over time (0% interest) they now require you to select a carrier. This means you get charged an activation fee for activating tje new device. It also means you can’t use that option if your carrier is not Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile.
Yeah, think I'll pass on doubling my wireless bill to get the same service, but thanks, Apple.
