“'Children in the US can be legally married in 41 states, physically punished by school administrators in 47 states, sentenced to life without parole in 22 states, and work in hazardous agriculture conditions in all 50 states.' Over and over again, the worst states for children are clustered around the 'pro-life' Bible Belt, and the map of the states that are the worst for children looks a lot like a map of red-state America."

A Big New Report on American Children Is Out. It’s Horrific.

“Protect the children” is a popular modern rallying cry. If only.

@gwynnion This is a dreadful picture we cannot ignore. The deadly combination of bible-banging, authoritarianism and Dickensian capitalism is killing off the prospects of us ever becoming a caring, civil society that looks out for our most vulnerable members and our future.

The concentration of this toxic cruelty in red states is all too predictable. Its on full display for the world to see in the kind of degenerates they elect to public office.

@pallsopp42 @gwynnion "Progressive or retard?", that's the Shakespearean question.
It shouldn't have to be.

If only the U.S. *fully* recognized & abided by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights & the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights...

@ArenaCops @gwynnion Sadly we have a cabal of degeneracy occupying half of the US congress and half of the Supreme court.

The fiction that the US is somehow separate from the rest of the world, let alone nature, continues to enfeeble the nation and its ability to do decent, good things whether or not they generate money.

@pallsopp42 @gwynnion Very true! The isolationist idea of "American exceptionalism" shouldn't keep people from getting informed, learning & understanding from priceless interaction with other nations, cultures, civilizations & their norms & values, like it has mostly been the case, since America came to understand itself as an immigrant nation — while regrettably limiting that genuinely exciting experience to immigration from white European territories for quite some time.
Still the nation remains capable of moving & changing, and it does — even if a number of fossilized boneheads may not like it or a bunch of corrupt populists are attempting to turn back time.
