A former coworker of mine made this and posted to our shared alumni slack: https://doyouneedatruck.autos/

It’s a very simple quiz that asks everything relevant about your situation and provides you an answer personalized to you. I can vouch that it’s actually 100% correct.

Do you need a truck?

@younata Damn, I really wanted a gigantic 4x4 Ram 9500 dually with 12.2L diesel that gets 5.7 MPG and is impossible to park in normal parking spaces.

Guess I will have to keep on truckin’ with my ’95 Toyota T100 that gets 25 MPG and is so reliable it is almost unbelievable.

@Av8rdan don’t forget the truck payment of $1000/month!

@younata Yep, factor in fuel and insurance and it can easily be a grand a month. I guess if you need a big truck to pull big trailers or for work, they are justified.

I’ve always got along fine on 4 cylinders.

Just got back from a trip to the reddest part of my state, and every other vehicle was a gigantic truck, often with just one person inside.

I guess some dudes need a huge truck to feel like a manly man. If they want a big truck, they ought to get their CDL and go drive for Swift.

@Av8rdan yeah, the vast majority of my trips are accomplished using no more than a peak of about 500 watts (2/3 horsepower). The vast majority of the time, I’m pulling much closer to 100-200 watts.

Consider the fact that I often “carpool”, and that’s an efficiency of under 5 watt-hours/passenger-mile!

Bonus, it keeps me healthy as a matter of course.

@Av8rdan @younata I do think trucks should exist. Unfortunately, most modern "trucks" aren't designed for utility. They are just performative capitalism.
