On this fateful date in 2001, I woke up in a 22-story Marriott hotel right between the twin towers in NY. I had planned to linger till around 10 a.m. But a last-minute meeting made me leave at 8:15, just 30 minutes before the first plane struck. The hotel was destroyed. I was saved. But we can never forget those who perished and the heroic first responders who saved other lives.

@waltmossberg

That's chilling. I appreciate this commemoration. Glad you're with us.

@waltmossberg My parents used to go up to NYC all the time and stay at the Marriott there, and would routinely have breakfast at the Windows on the World restaurant at the top of the north tower. At the last minute the day before they decided to stay in a midtown hotel. Had they not made that fateful last minute decision they’d have been at the top of the north tower when it was hit.
@waltmossberg (Hi Walt, long time no see. I miss the All Things Digital conference… good times.)
@waltmossberg the WTC was my subway stop, walked through there every morning. The first plane delayed my commute. I was on the subway platform one stop below the trade center when the second plane hit. Came up to street level in chaos with people screaming, paper raining down and sirens blaring. I ended up trapped in lower Manhattan until midday when I finally walked home to Brooklyn. I feel like one of the lucky ones.

Also a reminder of how tenuous the thread of fate is, that marks the boundary between living and dieing. One seemingly insignificant decision or occurrence; a longer (or shorter) line at the coffee shop can make a difference we are sometimes not even aware of.

@waltmossberg glad you survived. We will all remember that day in some way, but I prefer to remember those buildings from the day I watched from our school windows while this man climbed them https://apimagesblog.com/blog/2019/5/7/daredevil-climbs-world-trade-center-in-new-york

On May 26, 1977, George Willig scaled the outside of the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York. The following text is from an AP story released on Friday, May 27, 1977. By Malcolm N. Carter A daredevil toy maker conquered the quarter-mile-high World Trade Center like a human fly Thu

@waltmossberg Is it me or is Mayor Rudy conspicuously absent from today’s media commemoration of 9/11?
@waltmossberg I was on a metal/rock radio chat and someone just an hour later asked "How will they use this to take away our freedoms?"

#MoscowMitch has been fighting to avoid providing medical care for those brave first responders for decades.

That's who the GOP are.

@waltmossberg I was in a cab near ground zero when the first jet hit. My office was nearby and I had to get there to alert the staff to not come in and to grab the backups. I was leaving when the second jet hit. I saw the towers collapse. I saw the fighter jets racing overhead. I saw people emerging from the dust clouds in tears.

Yes. It can happen here, on our soil. It happened again on January 6. Terrorists are terrorists. We must be vigilant.
